About Me

Insulation Specialist - Ing. Martin Shanel, PhD

Ing. Martin Shanel, PhD

I am an experienced engineer and scientist passionate about all technologies enabling power generation and efficient conversions of energy. I am a strong believer in electrifying our daily lives, transport and aviation with clean energy and any means that reduce unnecessary burning of fossil fuels.

I started my career strongly equipped with master’s degree education about all things found in thermal powerplants and in renewable energy systems. I topped it up with a PhD in thermo-fluids science applied to the cooling of electrical machines.

From then on, I gathered over 20 years of industrial experience in product development, research and development, application engineering and technical marketing around electrical machines. In the last 14 years I am focused on the narrow discipline of electrical insulation materials and systems.

Over my years in industry, I developed a deep understanding of various aspects of electric machines. You can expect from me practical solutions based on my experience. If you have an inspiring idea or a project, I will be happy to join you to discuss it.

Participation in international standardization

I am actively engaged as a technical expert in working groups of technical committees of IEC to participate in setting standards for specifications and test methods of solid insulation materials (TC15) and general method for testing and qualification of electrical insulation materials and systems (TC112).

Publication and academic support history

I have published a number of papers as the main or co-author on the aspects of modelling and experimental investigations of cooling electrical machines, and for research around electrical endurance of insulation systems for e-drive applications.

Over the course of my career I acted as a company supervisor of several PhD projects at UK Universities and I also provided assessments of other PhD theses.
